Did y'all notice that the jet airplane example is about how a factory produced product was made customizable, yet is still manufactured in the very factories that the headline decries? Consider the possibility that what needs to change is not the "factory model" but what those factories are designed to produce. In my way of thinking the flaw is that the system is designed to mass produce obedient symbol manipulators when it should be mass producing socially interdependent state of mind optimizers. With the appropriate definition of what is meant to be produced we can apply the factory metaphor productively.

As a psychologist who specializes in motivation and engagement in learning contexts I am confident that we can now define the appropriate outcomes in ways that were not possible just a couple of decades ago.
